Following Directions - Activity 2

Game 1:  See and Spell Blends
Game 2:  See and Spell Diagraphs

(Word Blend Games)

This game provides practice at spelling and discriminating.  First grade students are given functional folders with directions (game directions) on how to find, see and spell words using blends and diagraphs.  The objective is to provide students independent practice in reading “real world” print.  The print items selected are glued on the left side of a file folder. Three sets of questions, written on index cards are placed on the right side of the folder.  Questions are written at three levels of difficulty, targeted at the lower-, average-, and above-average reading levels for students in the class. Children will begin with forming words using initial blends. They will then move on and learn to form words using vowel digraphs (one vowel sound written with two vowels). And then they will finish by developing the skills to form final blends.

Diagraphs are a pair of letters representing a single speech sound, such as the ph in pheasant or the ea in beat. digraphic (d-grfk). The print items selected are:  star, clock, glue train, slide, dress, crab, flower, snail, spider, peach, whale, cheese, shirt, fish, thumb, phone, wheel, chair, and shell that have been glued on the left side of a file folder. Three sets of questions are written on index cards on the right side of the folder and are written at three levels of difficulty, targeted at the lower-, average-, and above-average reading levels.  The students must match the picture and spell the word and then read the word.

Set 1: (for the lowest reader)

Can you name the picture?

Can you read the word?

Can you match the picture with the word?

Set 2: (for the average reader)

Can you tell the name of the picture and match it with the word?

Can you sound out the name?

Can you spell the word?

Set 3: (for the best readers)

Which letters in the words are blended together?

Which letters form the diagraphs for each word?

Are some of the word beginnings and endings alike?

1.       The folder code is written on the answer sheet.

2.       Select the questions and answer them. When you are finished, lift the card and compare your answers with the ones on the back of the card.

Each folder has a folder code to facilitate record keeping and identify the objective of the folder. Thus, folder code F.D. #1, indicates Following Directions, folder Number 1.  A master list is used to record the code and contents of each folder. The Master List looks like this:

The children will be provided with an answer sheet. It consolidates all the students’ activities with folders on one sheet. The following illustrates the format and content of a typical folder and a sample answer sheet.
